The Potty Fairy

After 10 months of changing diaper on 2 kids, I decided it was time to get Mason potty trained.  He started showing interest when he was about 18 months old.  Soon he started asking about going and I told him we could go pick out an Elmo potty and made a big deal about it.  He used it once and was less than impressed.

When he turned 2 I thought I might try again, so I went and bought all kids of underwear and we tried for about 2 days.  We were both totally frustrated so we quit.  Not to mention I was trying to sell our home and in the middle of moving and major life changes, not good timing.

Once we moved and were settled, I tried again, this time going potty shopping for the downstairs bathroom.  He picked out a baseball potty, and was very excited.  I also gave him an M&M if he went pee-pee or 2 M&Ms if he pooped.  This worked on and off for a week or so.  When he stopped using it I told him I was going to have Daddy take it back to the store for a little boy who would use it.  Mason ran to the bathroom, grabbed and handed to me and said, "Take it!"  I took both potties, all his underwear, and pull-ups and hid them in a box in the garage.  I decided if this was going to be his decision then he would have to ask.

Finally, 2 weeks ago, we went to the zoo with a group of our friends and one who has a 4 year old little boy Mason looks up to.  Mason kept asking where Brody went and I explained he was a big boy and needed to take potty breaks as he didn't wear diapers.   The last time was on our way out of the zoo and Mason looked at me and said, "Mommy, I want to big like Brody."  I said ok we can talk about it.  We talked all afternoon about this and at bed time I noticed he only had a few more diapers left in his basket.  I asked him if was ready to be done with diapers and he said yes.  So, I made him a deal, I said these would be the last of Mason's diapers and he would wear big boy underwear after he ran out.  He said he understood.  I made sure we had enough to get us to Friday night so we could start 1st thing Saturday morning.

Friday night we discussed how he was out of diapers and that sometimes the Potty Fairy comes to visit to bring all the things a big boy needs to use the potty and be done with diapers, and sometimes he leaves a prize.  I wrote a letter from the Potty Fairy explaining he went to the store and got back all the supplies Mommy and Daddy had returned and the prize (golf clubs) was for when he had a week accident free.

Now, for a prize you really need to pick something that will motivate them, but I might steer away from a time frame item, like tickets to Disney on Ice.  Just in case, they don't catch on right away.  We picked golf clubs because he loves sports and has recently taken to golf since he has watched his Daddy leave to go play.  And of course if Daddy is in to it, so is he.

He was so excited the next morning.  He ran into my room to wake me up, "Mommy, I'm ready to go potty and wear underwear!"  And he did.  He jumped on the potty and put on his underwear.  The first day I took him to try every 30 minutes.  I just set the timer on the microwave so we didn't forget.  He did have 2 accidents that  morning.  The second one I was trying to get him to the potty but didn't want to move him and have pee all over my carpet so I asked him if he could stop and he did and finished on the potty.  I did underwear while he was awake and pull ups for naptime and bed time.  I will say he and I both were getting a little frustrated with going every 30 minutes, we felt we spend all day in the bathroom.  He even cried after nap time, saying "I just want to wear diapers and be a baby."  But then I let him hold a golf club while he was sitting on the potty.  He decided they might be worth it, because he did great the rest of the day.

The next day, we had to go to Denver for a birthday party.  I was hesitant, since most of the "professionals" say to stay at home for the 1st few days, but come on, this is real life!  So I put a pull up on for the ride up and it was dry when I took it off.  He did poop in his pants during lunch, but I really blame myself for not watching for signs.  He did great at the party and even stayed dry on the way home.

And that was it!  No more accidents!  On Monday, I took him 1st thing in the morning and then every 2 hours unless he said he had to go.  Yes, by day 3 he was coming to my and telling me he had to go.  Day 7, I decided to test this a bit.  I was letting him tell me most of the time when he needed to go, unless I knew we were going to be away from a potty for a while.  But, I needed to run a few errands, on of which included trying on a few dresses.  Sure enough in the middle of the dressing he room, he looks and me says, "Mommy, I have to go!"  I tell him to hold it while I get dressed.  I hurry and grab him and the baby in the shopping cart.  We quickly race to the bathroom across the store (of course!) and he did it!  He held it until we got there and then he did his business.

So, today we celebrated.  He got free reign of his golf clubs and we took him to the miniture golf course to play putt-putt with his new putter. Oh yeah, and he got a hole-in-one!

Playdate with Mason's Bestie

What a sweet surprise! Mason's best friend, Hudson, came over to play today.  The boys enjoyed  playing in the splash table, climbing in the playhouse, and watching movies.

Hudson had his own approach to coming down the slide.
The boys sharing snacks while watching some Madagascar 2.
Time to go, big hugs.
And kisses!

Birthday Party, Finally!

Eventhough Mason turned 2 in February, I refused to throw him a birthday party. Maybe this makes me a bad mom, but I thought it made me a slightly more sane mom. We are settled in our new home, so we decided to host a housewarming/2nd birthday party for Mason. Our morning started with getting the kiddos ready for our baseball themed event.  Maggie had to wear her Mets jersey.
Then the kids enjoyed some sibling bonding, crawling in Reese's bed and sharing a few cuddles and laughs.
Mason was so excited when GaGa, Papu and Uncle Tim arrived.  He knew he would be partying in no time.  I love my wagon, thanks!
Mason enjoyed playing outside with his friends, baseball cake and of course, presents.
Mason and his buddy Beau taking the new wagon for a stroll through the kitchen.
We were pretty adament that Mason not open the boxes to get the toys out until his friends left, in fear of losing small parts.  So, of course, first thing this morning he was ready to get down and dirty with his new toys.  He is so intrigued by his tent, but he is insistent on playing baseball in the tent.
Checking out his new sleeping bag.
Maggie finally woke up from her morning nap to join us.  "I want to play too, Mommy!"
Mason tried out his new mower.  Thanks Uncle Tim, Grandma Krisi, Grandpa Dan and Aunt Molly!  Great minds think alike ;)

Photo Shoot

Ironically, it takes me less time to getting ready for church without Jeremy here. Since he had to work today, we had some extra time on our hands, so we had a photo shoot. I tried to get some naked baby shots of Maggie to capture her lusciousness. Then, I put her in her church clothes and snapped a few. Mason always gets jealous, so I knew I would be able to get a few of him, too. I never imagined he would be up for a costume change and smile. Finally, some great shots of my little man!

Love those big blue eyes!

Upgrade!

With any home, they are never perfect.  Our new home has great space and an amazing location, but some of the interior choices were poor.  It always amazes me what a little paint can do.  The kids bathroom had peach walls with a terrible shower curtain, who knows what kind of vinyl, and hideous white pulls.
I know the shower curtain isn't much better, but the WALLS! And maybe the floors are growing on me but they don't seem nearly as ugly.  They will get replace down the road or when I find that money tree :)
Oh yeah, I changed the pulls too.
The laundry room was the same lovely peach.
Thanks to Pinterest, for some inpiration, it is now a bright aqua.  I still need to change the light out but I don't mind doing the laundry so much anymore.

Family Update

I think Spring is finally here!  We are busy getting settled into our new home.  The kids love having a playroom, Jeremy loves the big 3 car garage and well I love the laudry room, big kitchen and room to run away from the chaos :).  We are meeting all our new neighbors, everyone is really friendly and have created a great community here to raise a family.

We have also been busy with "bucaball" season.  Mason is still obsessed with baseball.  We took him to a Sky Sox game last week and Friday night to Rockies vs Mets.  He cheered the whole game for both teams.  He loved getting to play t-ball in the left field fan zone.  He also discovered his love for Cracker Jacks.
He was so excited to go.  He was decked in all his Mets gear.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Maggie's update.  She had her 6 month doctor's appointment on Friday.  She is a very healthy girl.  She weighed 19 lbs 14oz, 95 percentile and was 28 1/2 inches long, 99 percentile.  She is quite the princess around here.  She can't stand to be left alone and loves to be the center of attention.  Her best friend is Mason.  He can walk in the room and she lights up and starts laughing.  I love riding in the car with them.  I don't know what they do in the backseat but all I hear is laughter from both of them and it is the sweetest thing!  She's a terrible sleeper, still.  She wakes up anywhere from 1 to 3 times a night, but she's a great napper.  I asked the doctor and told me to cut her naps, so we will see.  She is rolling all over the place, and gets in the crawling position, so I'm sure she will take off any day.

Apparently chubby babies snuggle with their bottles.

BUCABALL

Saying Mason is obsessed with baseball is an understatement. He plays everyday, carries a bat, ball and glove nearly everywhere, and would rather watch it than cartoons. His favorite team is the New York Mets, just like Daddy. Maggie and I are just thrown into. So, today I decided to do a photo shoot while everyone was in a good mood and in their baseball gear. Oh yeah, "bucaball!" Mason can say baseball but one of his 1st words was bucaball, so when he gets excited he still calls it bucaball. I love it and dread the day he stops calling it that.

It was also a lot of fun to play with my photo editing.  I have to admit, I think I'm getting pretty good!
